Over the next week we will be exploring how Bram Stoker carefully arranges Dracula to
play upon our deepest fears and desires, and we will also consider what
Stoker's novel reveals to us about deep human conflicts and
preoccupations that we all share (see notes on "The Human Condition" to
be given on Monday). After a short unit on Dracula, we will be moving on to The Crucible, which is a tragedy.
Given the material we will be reading, it's worth asking ourselves a
simple question: why are people so attracted to stories designed to
terrify us or make us sob in despair? What brings hoards of people to
the theater to watch The Conjuring or watch Titanic on repeat? What does this say about us?
Please respond with a standard open response, due on Tuesday. Thanks,
and don't forget to hang some garlic in your room before bed.
Everyone loves a terrifying or sad story. I know for a fact that I do. When I'm looking for a good book to read or a good movie to watch, my attention usually is given to the sad books/movies. They usually have the best story line. I think people usually go for these types of books because they get the feeling of terror or sadness that they don't have in their lives. Almost always, tragedies and horrors always end with some type of happy ending. Audiences love happy endings. In addition to the ending of a terror film/book people also love the thrill they get by just reading or watching something. It’s a great type of entertainment for most people. I wouldn’t flock to the movie theaters to watch a scary film such as The Conjuring if I was alone. Those types of movies scare me just a little bit too much. The main reason I think people are attracted to terrors and tragedies are because they want to feel a certain way without actually experiencing the sadness or terror themselves. This says that people love a good sob story and a good horror story. It makes people feel like they are apart of something scary or sad. Sometimes, people prefer these types of books or movies because they can relate a certain way to them. In my opinion, this is why I think people would hoard to the movie theater to watch The Conjuring or The Titanic.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason people are drawn to scary or sad stories or movies. I personally love scary movies and the feeling of being scared. I have gone to see all the scary movies as soon as they come out, if someone will see it with me. I will never see a scary movie alone because that is just way too scary. I think that is why I don’t like reading scary books, because usually when I read I like to be alone so that I can focus on the story. Scary movies are so interesting because the movie or story can be completely fake and farfetched. This helps people feel better about the story because then they know it isn’t real and they are going to be okay. But I feel the scariest stories or movies are the ones that are real or based on true stories. I don't really know why i love being scared out of my mind watching scary movies, but it's the best. Also I think that people are drawn or attracted to sad stories because they can be relatable in a way. Even if the story is crazy and not even normal, you can still relate to it if someone dies or gets their heart broken. People love scary movies and sad ones too.
ReplyDeleteA story of despair usually shows raw human emotions that are at times very difficult to deal with. As opposed to stories of despair, stories with happy endings show superficial emotions that are often predictable. Beatific stories show emotions to either extreme, a character may be extremely happy or sad. Although stories that are beatific may be at times poignant nothing is as heart wrenching as when a character does not know what to feel or how to act. In Titanic for example Rose is faced with despondency because Jack is now dead but she also feels elated because she no longer has to be molded by her family or fiancĂ©. Death and loss also brings about raw human emotions that are often concealed, in literature or film when this is a theme the story becomes very poignant and has a greater effect than if the story was a happy one. Life is also filled with despair, all over the world are people who suffer on a daily basis from many desolating things, in literature or a movie when that is portrayed well people would gravitate to this because it’s real and devastating and also very heart wrenching. Many people are enamored by the themes of death or doom this may be because these themes show emotions at a level were many may not be comfortable with, people may also want to be frightened or experience great sadness for someone else because this is not something that is featured in daily life. These dreadfully heart breaking stories also feature injustice, many are born with some sense of fairness and if someone is not treated fairly or the worst possible thing happens to them many may start to wonder about deities and wonder why certain people have to suffer. The fact that many may be drawn to terrifying or sad stories that are unpredictable at times show that humans may prefer a sad story that shows real emotions instead of superficial ones. Many may also be drawn to sad stories because they introduce emotions that are conflicting and may cause one change their view point of the world. Stories of melancholy may also leave the audience or reader with unsettling emotions that many are taught to conceal, these stories may raise topics that are unsettling for all.
ReplyDeleteMost people are usually attracted to sad or terrifying stories. Whenever I go to the book store I am drawn to the books that have terrifying plots or story lines. I think the reason people like myself and others are drawn to this type of story is because they get to experience things through books and movies that they don’t get to usually experience in their everyday lives. Also, people love to sit back and hear about or watch things happening to others because it’s much better then it happening to you. I myself go for more of the tear jerkers or “chick flicks” like The Notebook or the Titanic. I love the felling you get inside while you read all about the tragic events that happen to the characters. It’s like you don’t have to firsthand experience the events to feel the same feelings that the characters are. America today is all about creating Hollywood films that bring in billions of dollars to just straight up terrify people. Most people love the fact that they can get the sad or terrified feeling just from watching or reading a story. That all being said it says that everyone loves the fact that they can feel certain feelings by reading literature or watching a film. It has been that way for a while and will probably stay this way for quite some time because it’s a great way to second hand experience terrified or tragic feelings.
ReplyDeleteWhy do people love to be scared? Because it gets the adrenaline pumping. Nothing makes you feel more alive than almost pooping your pants, apparently. People line up by the hundreds at movies so they can feel the adrenaline high that comes right after a demon comes out of the shadows and rips someone in half. It is like a drug that drags you away from the real world and makes you pee yourself. The worries and problems of life are gone because some guy was just killed by a possessed little girl. But that is not the reason people like to watch sad movies. The only reason I can imagine people like those movies is because of the connection you feel with the fictional characters that go through the hard times and good times in the stories. People can relate to them in real life. (I don't particularly enjoy movies like that, so I'm not exactly sure about that, but it sounds reasonable. I like action movies, like Batman.) As far as I can tell, people love scary movies and sad movies for opposite reasons. Scary movies drag you away from reality, and sad movies drag you into the harsh realities of reality.
ReplyDeleteMany people are drawn to things related to sadness, love, or horror. Being human we like to experience emotion and that is something that movies can provide for us. Although falling in love in real life and watching someone fall in love in a movie are two different things they often do bring out the same emotions inside of people. Someone might be drawn to a certain book or movie like this because it is an emotion in life they don't often experience but they do like the feel of it, or because they experience something similar and they can relate to it. The same goes for a horror movie. Horror movies have lots of thrill and drama, something not a lot of people experience in their everyday lives. Although one may not necessarily want to experience something that happens in a horror movie they can still get the same feeling from watching it, just on a lower level. Most of human society enjoys movies that incorporate sadness or horror because they like the emotion and stories that come along with it.
ReplyDeleteScary movies have been a fixture in cinemas for decades. Tragedies have been produced for hundreds of years, but what makes them so popular? The reason that people flock to the movie theaters to see the latest horror movie or the newest tragedy are the way that they play with your emotions. A sense of fear or terror is about is intense as a feeling of wistfulness and love. The way that your emotions are jerked around, and the feelings that you experience are some of strongest feelings that you can experience. People tend to use these movies to to experience feelings that they aren't able or haven’t yet experienced. Scary movies are released extremely frequently and most of them actually do very well, but what makes them do better than most comedies is the fact that they can give you a shot of adrenaline, such as a fight or flight situation, that you simply can't get in a comedy or romance movie. The fact that you seen hundreds of teen girls watch tragedies for hours make you wonder what you actually enjoy about them. Many people actually cry over certain romance movies, for something to cause you to cry it has to make you feel many strong emotions that you may not be able to feel otherwise. The reason that these movies hold up so well and have been produced for so long are the ways that they can make you feel, how people fall in love with the characters, or how they sit on the edge of their seats for two or so hours can cause you to experience emotions you may not normally feel.
ReplyDeleteOut of all types of literature there is out there, terror and horror books are definitely on the top when it comes to me. Not just books, however, I enjoy listening to real-life terror stories too and watching horror films. I feel that horror is a theme that can make anyone grab on to their seats. I believe that tragedies, and terror keeps the audience on their toes and they crave for more. The suspense that is created within the atmosphere makes a reader to continue a book without even knowing or to make an audience watching a scary film to look even if they don't want to. Suspense and curiosity are two elements why people can not resist when it comes down to tragedy and horror films/books. What makes a horror story so interesting is the fact that you do not know what will happen next, kind of like a mystery. Things will pop of no where and in the matter of minutes, the whole story can be changed. In addition to this, the phenomenon of the supernatural and what is can do, also lures the audience to come back again and again. The emotion, feeling and adrenaline pumping tension is what brings hoards of people like us to the theatre every single time.
ReplyDeleteWe are drawn to films that evoke a feeling of terror and melancholy that we lack in our day to day lives. Human beings grow bored with the repetitive, banal actions in our day to day lives. We see out entertainment and a thrill when the occasion arises. The films are designed in such a way so that they may hook and snag at what we think to be our deepest and most secret fears. The heart-racing adventures that take place in the plot of the film supply us with satisfaction that we may experience without actually being in any danger. There is a thirst for action in risk that is innate to every human being, as minimal as it may be. Our minds are curious and want to poke and prod at even things that may be harmful, and life cannot always properly quench this thirst and so we seek alternatives. It provides a way to see heart wrenching and suspense filled events without actually experiencing the turmoil that it may cause in reality. Another reason we are drawn to these types of media, is to see how characters deal with the situations. Most people enjoy characters who deal with the conflict in brave, even slightly hesitant manner. Whereas, the characters who run or cry about the threat are not often fan favorites. However it is often the brave characters that are not realistic whatsoever. If replaced with the antagonist in a horror movie, most people would react as the one who breaks down paralyzed with fear. In a way, it reveals that people are drawn to the characters that portray the traits and characteristics that we mainly lack in ourselves, which just further draws us to the masterpiece at hand.
ReplyDeleteHumans have a basic need to want to feel things, to feel strong emotions especially. Sometimes this causes us to just want to read happy stories, or watch funny TV shows, to make us feel better. But that leaves the question? Why do we want to watch movies that terrify us or make us ball from sadness? I believe it's because we want to be able to experience a wide array of emotions. Being happy can make a person content, but it lacks drama and excitement to add to our everyday lives. When we watch a horror film we can feel the rush of being scared, and screaming our lungs out, that we wouldn't be facing in everyday life. In content filled with sadness we can let out our feelings and just have a good cry. They are both extreme ways of feeling things, but that can be very exciting for humans to experience. I think it shows mankind's adventurous side. We don't want to just feel the emotions of every day life, sometimes we require more.
ReplyDeleteI think that things like horror, sadness, love and tragedy draw people in because those are interesting and they keep you on the edge of your seat. I know that I don't like horror because after I watch a movie or read a book those images are stuck in my head and I think that those things are going to happen to me. No one wants a bland story that you can predict and isn't interesting to you. In a horror story you are always anticipating the next horrific scene or the next thing to jump out and scare you. You know it is coming it is just a matter of when in the story. Love and tragedy also takes you away from your everyday life and you can experience things you might never experience and feel the same emotions just by watching a movie or reading a book. You can also see what the character does while he in going through a problem and how he decides to handles it. You can think if you where in that situation what would you do. Would you do the same thing or do something differently? Every one of these stories creates drama in it and is probably is the most important thing in making a story. Humans are naturally attracted to drama because it could relate to you in some way. You could have gone through something similar or just like and are interested in the drama that is gong on. That is why reality shows are so popular because its all about who can create the most drama and problems.
ReplyDeleteWho doesn’t love to have tears running down there face when you’re watching a movie? I know I love it. Sad movies have been a huge phenomenon for quite some time now, and they just keep getting bigger. All directors know if they see tears running down viewers facing then they have done their job. I believe people enjoy watching terrifying movies because they get to what some people may have to live with. Not all horror/sad movies are very realistic but there are many storylines that could occur in real life. For instance, the movie “My Sister’s Keeper” is about when a young teen gets diagnosed with cancer and it shows how her family coped with her sickness. In my opinion, this is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. People may like to watch movies like this because it helps them understand what people go through every day. Directors design tragedies to share to the world what goes on in every day life. They tend to promote popular tragedies to make life in America better. By making these kinds of movies viewers may learn something that might prevent them from doing something that wouldn’t end to well. People love to go to the theaters to see these tragic films because they enjoy seeing what other people’s lives may be like. Not necessarily does this mean that we like to see people in misery and pain just because we enjoy watching tragic movies. I believe that it says we just like to see what challenges other people are faced with every day. It helps us feel the
DeletePeople are usually attracted to stories that are created to terrify them or deeply sadden them. In my opinion the reason this happens for scary movies is people’s desire to feel or experience something that they do not ordinarily experience. People also are attracted to stories that are sad because they are able to relate to them. Also, sometimes it helps to see things that are really sad to make yourself feel better, that your life isn’t as bad as you think it is. I personally do not like scary stories, I just don’t like the feeling of being scared. Horror stories and sad stories enable people to experience emotions that they do not experience usually. Most people like the intense and frightening feeling they get while reading or watching scary movies. Many people are attracted to the unknown. A lot of scary movies or scary stories focus on the mystery of the unknown. The reader is drawn to what might happen next. This occurrence takes place with our daily news. Most people who watch the news are drawn to the sad and tragic news and less to the happier and innocent ones. Tragedies and disasters always grab the headlines, while happier stories are found in the middle somewhere. Some people may be drawn to this as a learning experience, so if a similar occurrence happens in their life, they are prepared.
ReplyDeleteIn good storytelling, there is always a device used to direct and hold the attention of the audience. The device used dictates which genre the novel or movie falls under and also can be seen in the plot. There are many genres that capture the audience's minds and feelings, but the genre of horror, along with its gruesome scenes and images of terror, captures and controls viewers' minds, to be forever etched in their memories. With such repetitive and vivid detail does a horror film build upon its scenes, trying to create an immense amount of suspense and eventually resolves the plot, while leaving the viewers in a terrified place of mind. As intentioned by the creators, the horror and repetitive, vivid events can occur in the minds of the past viewers, holding them hostage, and making them relive tragedies of terror again and again. From the description above of the techniques and trickery of the mind used in horror films, it may be confusing to think that people are willing and receptive to experience horror through text or images. However, there is a sense of curiosity and willingness in a lot of people that encourages them to experience the feeling of being scared and wanting to feel the pain and corruption that their minds can create from the repetitious, vivid, and suspenseful scenes of a horror story. Furthermore, the feeling of being scared, sparked by allowing horror in your mind, is destructive but enjoyable to some people. The enjoyment from destruction of an once innocent mind is like the thrill drugs can make, while destroying the body, but also causing an addiction to form in the mind to come back and enjoy again. A person who enjoys the destruction to the mind through experiencing horror is scary, wrong, and damaging to their environment. In conclusion, people who want to be scared can become addicted to horrors and are pulled into novels or theaters in order to partially appease an addiction of atrocity.

ReplyDeleteThroughout the years, horror and tragedy stories have been extremely popular among young adults. I like watching scary movies because I can feel all the terror and emotion while being in a safe controlled setting. Same goes for sad or tragic movies. I can feel the sadness and the despair that the characters are experiencing all the while knowing that my life is unaffected. Another reason people may be drawn to horror stories is that many have unimaginable or even supernatural situations. The fear of the unknown and not knowing what's going to happen is what draws me to scary stories. Because I am in no real danger I can think about the things presented to me and even enjoy them. Some relate to tragic stories because they may feel some kind of personal connection. Maybe a tragic love story could remind them of a lost love or a story filled with death could remind them of the people they have lost in their life. No matter the reason, humans are drawn to tragic or horror stories.
When it comes to reading different genres of novels and/or short stories, people are mainly attracted to tragedies and horrors. This is because people want to be intrigued in something when they are reading, and a novel that is really sad can touch someone's feelings to a certain extent and it will make them want to read on. If a novel is scary, it will suspense the reader and they will constantly be wanting to know what happens next, forcing them to read on. For example, if I'm in a book store wanting to buy myself a book to read and I see a book with a tire swing and tree on the cover and another book with a terrifying monster on the cover cowering over a dead body, I'm without a doubt going to pick the one with a monster. Tragic and terror filled stories are the ones that people actually enjoy reading because it keeps there attention and never really bores them and they are always wanting more. When I say that, I speak from personal experience because whenever I read a scary or sad book I always want to know what happens next and I find myself reading a book every night since I just cant stop. Especially if you are at a good part in your book such as the climax, its very hard to put the book down and start it up another day because you wont have the same emotion as before. When it's in the heat of the moment, you have a different effect from the book rather than if you stop reading and then start it up again a week later. Whatever happens in a sad or horrifying book most likely in some cases does not happen in reality and a lot of people-including myself- enjoy reading about a somewhat fiction that relates to peoples lives. In some other cases, a sad or horrifying book can be exactly what happens in real life and people simply read about it because they want the truth to become known to them and they want to be aware of the cold and sometimes harsh reality. To conclude, terrors and tragedies are personally my two favorite genres to read and I'm almost positive I speak for many others as well.
ReplyDeletePeople seem to naturally be intrigued by stories of horror or extreme tragedy. The desire to read something frightening can be compared to the effect riding a roller coaster can have. For some people there is nothing like the feeling of adrenaline coursing through the body, or feeling like you are losing control with out actually being in danger. I think humans are drawn to things that seem dangerous out of curiosity, even though no one wants to get hurt. So maybe that's why the idea of reading a horror story is so appealing. The ability to have an adrenaline rush and read about horrifying things with out being in any real danger. When it comes to tragic stories like the literature of Shakespeare or sad movies like the Titanic, I think people do it for an emotional release. To be able to sit there and have a reason to cry allows people to let out other sadness they may be experiencing in their own lives. When you watch or read something sad you may be able to relate to some of the things the characters are experiencing. Now hopefully a person can't literally relate to a Shakespeare story, but on some level they may be able to relate to one of the conflicts. To be able to relate to a sad story can help people deal with tough situations and that is the amazing thing about literature. The fact that we are drawn to stories that terrify or depress us just goes to show that sometimes people like the feeling of losing control of their emotions. Watching characters go through sad or scary situations can help us to cope with these types of situations in our own lives.
ReplyDeleteWhether it is watching a movie or reading a book, people do not experience such drastic drama in their daily lives. The thrill of being scared or the pain in your heart from a sad story is something that people don’t feel regularly. That is why something, books and movies, so different can in change be what people are attracted to. When reading a good book, you find yourself in the story. You can then feel everything the characters do and in a sense do what the characters do. This can lead to experiencing something that you haven’t experienced before. Laughing at a comedy or wishing you had that romance is you feeling something that you do not always feel. Watching that movie is what made you happy. People tend not to show what they are really feeling. In a way, crying or reacting to the story could be a way for these people to let out what they have built up inside. It is like giving them something to react to. There is no one who doesn’t like stories. There are some who don’t like to read but that is just because they haven’t found the right book. Having and feeling all kinds of different emotions is what people want. Doing nothing is like feeling nothing. People want to feel something. This goes to show that human beings don’t always just want the ordinary. They want to be surprised, overwhelmed, and kept on the edge of their seat. They don’t want something they already have.
ReplyDeleteMany people nowadays love terrifying and heart-throbbing stories. One of the reasons is because it gets your emotions going. Stories and movies like these can make you cry or scream in horror. Some people love the feeling of being scared and watching horror movies and others like a good romance movie that can get the water works going. People love watching a scary movie, because you can feel like you are trapped in a haunted house along with the characters and live the nightmare with them almost. Scary movies leave people tense and on the edge of their seat; leaving them eager for a sequel. Sad and romantic movies can take you on a heart wrenching adventure of love and heartbreak. In my opinion I love happy/sad movies that make you cry a little. Whether is tears of joy or sadness; people love how a movie can make them express a certain emotion or think about something differently than they had before. I know for a fact whenever I cry watching a movie, it is good; mostly because it takes quite a bit to get me to cry watching a movie. Afterwards I always think, “wow, this movie actually made me feel something and cry, I love that movie.” I think movies that make you feel any kind of emotion are the kind of movies and novels that draw you back for more. Also, people love books that gets the heart pumping of eyes watering, because it’s actually quite amazing that just through description an author can put such a clear picture in our heads and a feeling in our hearts. All of this says that we either love seeing others in worse pain or sorrow than we may be in; which is awful, but true and see characters happiness which makes us happy also. Terrifying and heart-throbbing movies and novels have become very popular nowadays.
ReplyDeleteAs human beings, we enjoy certain films and novels that can make us feel a certain way. Love stories and tragedies often take a persons interest and allows them to engage with a story. You begin to be put in almost the same emotional state as those in the book, and as people we enjoy this. For instance, some may have experienced such a tragedy and show interest in the topic for they can relate. On the other hand, some may be drawn to a particular story for it brings about an emotional state they have never experienced. However, this is the case with many people. Most will read a tragedy for the topic is so horrific they can’t resist. It may be so radical that they have never seen anything in compare. Other humans may use these depressing films and stories as a sort of therapy. They read or watch tragic stories often when they are going through a hardship themselves. For instance, after a hard breakup, a girl will watch sad love stories to make her feel better about herself. In these types of stories it is also easy to become closer to certain characters. We often pick sides as to what character in a story we can relate to or feel for best. You begin to experience what the character feels and begin to feel more involved in the story. Tragedy excites us and leaves us on edge, for you become so in tuned in the topic.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that attracts people to horror or sob stories is the thrill and the heart warming feelings that they give us. Horror movies bring excitement into our lives in a way that is often not true and not risky to our lives in the real world. Often we don’t feel overly scared or too sad but in the movies and stories it gives us access to these emotions but in a controlled environment, because we can put down a novel or pause the movie which is easier for us to do, because we can’t do that in our own lives. It’s better to deal with these serious emotions in something that is not quite as real, as our own personnel lives. But it could also mean that we want to see that other people even though it may not be real have a harder time with their lives then we do in our own lives. So we could just like these things because they’re entertaining or because it’s a way to make us feel better about our own lives
ReplyDeletePeople are attracted to read stories that are terrifying or sad because they touch your emotions in many ways. They usually end with a happy ending which leaves you feeling relieved and in a good mood because it all worked out. The plots obviously the best part though. It can be sad or scary depending on the genre and can connect to you in many ways. When I read a scary story, I visualize the text, imagining how terrifying it actually would be and it will even send a chill down my spine every now and again. In a sad story, I feel sorry for the character, imagine how it could’ve been different to make it a happier story, imagine how they must feel and how I would feel in their place. Mobs of people rush to the theatres for these movies because it makes it even easier to imagine what is happening because you can literally see exactly what’s happening right in front of you. They also add special effects, background music and a dark setting to enhance your experience. This says that as a society, we love to get that adrenaline rush of an unrealistic setting that comes with a scary movie or the harsh connection to our own lives that we can conclude after watching a sad movie. After watching a sad movie or reading a sad book it helps us realize how fortunate and lucky most of us are. After watching a scary movie it’s often that most people have nightmares as they imagine the same setting but this time with themselves and their friends are the characters this time which makes it a thousand times more horrifying. These two genres always lead people to draw conclusions to their own lives in good and bad ways which is generally why I believe we enjoy watching them.
ReplyDeletePeople are so attracted to stories designed to terrify us or make us sob in despair because they simply like it. People like something that is interesting, terrifying, and sometimes sad. Personally, I think that scary stories are the best because they give off a really good feeling. For example: terrifying, creepy, heart throbbing, horrifying, nervous, and etc…Whenever I read a scary book I get drawn into it really quickly, I can imagine that I’m in the book and I was playing a character in that book. At night, I couldn't stop reading because I really want to find out what’s going to happen next in the book. It’s different for sad stories/book because I feel a different emotion. I always have this sad feeling, more like heartbroken. For other people that like to read about sad stories more, they have these feelings that makes them want to burst out crying. The book might be related to their love life, or it’s something that they’ve been struggling with. We humans have many different kind of emotions. Whenever we read a sad book/story we feel sadness, gloomy, heartbroken, and etc… Whenever we read a scary book/story we feel excitement, fun, scary, terrifying, nervous, frightening, and etc…In other words, people like stories and books that can make them feel the excitement and sadness in it. What brings many people to the theatre to watch The Conjuring or watch Titanic on repeat because the movies attract them, they get drawn into it very quickly and it was very interesting. Also, they want to experience those same emotions again, but they want someone to experience it with them too. Overall, this says that we get drawn into reading things that makes us sad or terrified simply because we want to feel those emotions and we like it.
ReplyDeletePeople naturally seem to be attracted to stories designed to terrify us or sob in despair. The desire to read or watch something that was made to be frightening might come from the thrill, or adrenaline that comes along with it. The sense of fear without actually being in any danger may be appealing to some people. I think a major reason people are drawn to scary stories or movies is to see how other humans cope with certain situations, life-like or not. As humans, we enjoy reading novels or watching movies that make us feel a certain way whether it be scary, sad, happy, or romantic. Tragedies, written by authors like William Shakespeare tend to be very popular. People like to read these sad, mortifying stories for many reasons. Sad stories may be read in order for people to feel better about their lives. Love stories may be read to make people feel happy. However, I think the main reason people read certain genres is to compare the situations occurring in the novel to their own lives. When it comes to sad movies, like the Titanic, it gives people a reason to let out their emotions. Crying over a movie let’s people let out their emotions due to situations in their own lives. Everyone loves a good sad or scary story, maybe because they’re looking for a good read, or maybe they’re looking for an adrenaline rush or emotional release. Either way, as humans we are attracted to these two genres for a number of reasons.
ReplyDeleteMany people are attracted to scary and sad stories. People may be drawn to these stories because of the thrill they get while watching or reading them. While watching a scary movie I tend to cover my eyes at the scary parts but I always catch myself peeking through my fingers to keep watching. We tend to just be attracted to the shock we get because we don’t get a shock like that on an everyday basis. Also, not knowing what is going to happen next intrigues people and gets your adrenaline rushing when something jumps out and scares you. During movies like the Titanic we seem to get so into the movie we start to feel what the characters feel. The Titanic is based on a true story, movies and books based on a true story seem to really catch people because it is something that someone actually experienced, whether good or bad. A movie that me cry every time is “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks, this movie is about a teenage girl and her younger brother who go to visit their dad for the summer, this girl has been in trouble lately and hasn’t liked her dad much since her left her family. She is a great pianist, over the summer she doesn’t spend much time with her dad more with her boyfriend, closer to the end of the summer she finds out her dad has cancer, the way she spends the last few days with her dad is really heartbreaking. It makes you think if you were put in the situation what would you do? It’s just a really sad situation and shows you what other people go through. Whether it is a horror movie or a sad one it’s the feeling we get that makes us want more.
ReplyDeleteSome people love scary movies because of the rush, and some people watch sad movies after a break up. But, I think that we love horror movies and depressing movies because they play on two of our most powerful emotions. Our emotions are what make us human and sometimes you need to reconnect with those feelings, even if they aren’t necessarily good ones. This shows that we are in touch with our feelings and are okay with letting out a good scream or a good cry. I also believe that, from a non-emotional point of view, we love stories. Whether they are spoken, read, heard or watched, we just love a great story, and sometimes the not so happy ones, are the ones that draw us in the most because they have so much depth and so much character development. Now, that’s not to say that a happy or peaceful story doesn’t have good character development or is uninteresting, but sometimes we relate more easily with sad or scary movies, because those are the emotions that stay with us or scar us the most. But, then again, some people just go to enjoy, not necessarily to relate or cry. Some people go to enjoy the rush of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, without having to worry about an actual crazy psycho killer. All in all, I think people want to feel the emotions that those movies or stories throw upon you, be able to relate and cry, all the while knowing that they’re in a safe place and that they can always just close the book or shut the television off, and not have to worry about remembering to put garlic on their window before sleeping.
