ReplyDeleteA. For an essay to be called great it cannot simply state an opinion or a fact, instead it should be written in an engaging manner. The thesis of an essay needs to be profound so that the person will want to continue to read. The very first sentence of an essay should not be something like "my essay is about aphorisms", instead the first sentence should be able to grasp the attention of the reader so that they will drop whatever else they are doing just to read your essay. Even though an essay should begin great it also should not dwindle with each passing paragraph. An essay should also have proper grammar and spelling, no one will think that your opinions are pertinent if you do not know the difference between 'there' and 'their'. If the grammar and spelling is not correct it may also diminish the value of the information at hand. Personally, I was taught to back up what I say with evidence, in an essay if you were to say that Romeo was not really in love with Juliet it would be necessary to explain with evidence from the book why you thought that. By using evidence to back up statements perhaps the reader may understand your point of view. Like the thesis the conclusion also needs to be profound, the conclusion should restate your entire essay in a concise format. For the last sentence of the conclusion I was thought to repeat my thesis, however I find this method irritatingly redundant instead I prefer if the very last sentence leaves the reader with another conundrum relating to the topic that I discussed which will make them continue to think about the essay.
B. When faced with a challenging text I was taught to read and reread. However, personally I do no find it effective to keep reading the same text over and over while not really understanding what it is saying. To overcome a difficult text I attack one sentence at a time so that I am able to decipher its meaning. Working this way enables me to understand the entire text by the time I am finished. I also try to make notes of what each sentence is trying to explain so that I can go back and look it over if needed. Reading each sentence then trying to find out its meaning also allows me to draw upon an other hidden morals that are often found in literature.
A. There are many important elements that make a great essay. In my opinion, I would say that the person who is writing the essay should have a full understanding of the topic they're writing about. It is hard to read an essay that keeps restating the same thing and has no depth. Another key element an essay should have is that the writer has an organized approach. Sometimes when your topic has many different parts to it, the writer can skip back and forth between parts. It becomes very confusing if that happens. These are some key elements that I always remember when I begin to write an essay.
ReplyDeleteB. Many times I will encounter a tough text when reading in class. For example, last year we had to read Romeo and Juliet. When I first started reading, I automatically felt overwhelmed. This was very difficult for me to understand. I was taught to read all at once and then reread for a better understanding. This never worked for me. To get through difficult text, I read the whole thing, then I go to spark notes to help me fill in the missing pieces. Another thing that helps me is class discussions on the text. I just sit back and take in what everyone is saying and listen to what the teacher has to say. Then I take notes on what I didn't understand. These strategies help me a lot when I am having a hard time reading a certain text.
A. There are many different elements of a "great essay". Putting them together correctly can help you create a great essay. One important part is the thesis to explain and state the main points your essay is going to prove or portray and lure the audience in. Another important factor is quotes. Quotes back up your points are arguments to make them seem more believable or reliable. Details are important to show your knowledge of the subject. Correct spelling and grammar so it is easy to read and looks better. Descriptive words is another element that you can add to keep the reader engaged. Finally, Strong points are important elements because you will be able to back them up easily.
ReplyDeleteB. Different people cope with difficult text in different ways. Someone might have to try several different ways before finding one that works for them. One strategy that I have for coping with it is to read it over as many times as you need, because when you read it again it may suddenly click to you. Another trick is to look things up that you don't know, like words or phrases, to grasp a better understanding of what's going on. The final strategy is to talk the text out with someone and see if they might be able to explain it to you. Using all these methods I usually am able to cope with difficult text.
A. There are many elements that can make up a great essay. I think a great essay has a strong thesis statement that clearly states what the person is going to write about, so there is no confusion. Also, a great essay has a lot of evidence and is very detailed in a well organized way. While writing an essay you always want to get the readers attention. If a person has a lot of details and evidence then the person reading the essay can stay intrigued to what they are reading, causing it to be a great essay.
ReplyDeleteB. When reading a difficult text there are different ways to cope with it. The way I was always taught was to reread the text and it would help me get a better understanding, but if I'm continuously reading something I don't understand it's not going to help me understand it any better than I already do. What works for me is asking someone else who it is not difficult for. If I am not with anyone I use the computer to look up some of the words I don't know or get some sort of summary of the text that might explain it a little easier. Another way that helps me is if we're all reading the same book in class going over it as a whole class and having discussions about it that way if some people understand things others don't everyone will benefit from it and learn something they might not have understood.

ReplyDeleteA. There are many factors that lead to a "great essay", not a boring and tedious one but a clear and interesting one. A thesis statement plays a big role in an essay. A thesis statement should grasp the reader and make them feel bound to read the entire paper no matter how boring the topic may be. The thesis should also introduce the paper in a correct manner and allow the reader to be clearly informed. In addition, there also should be supporting facts that make the essay more understandable. I feel that that a great essay should also be relevant to the topic. An off topic essay will not just bore the reader but it will also lead to the wrong direction. A great essay should flow and have a good structure.
B. When I encounter a difficult text my first approach it to keep on going ahead and to see it if might get clearer. I have also been taught to use context clues as a guide and to make the text a bit clearer. When I use the familiar words that I know, it helps me to figure out the words that I do not know. However, the best method for me is to re-read the text until I make more sense of it and is more understandable. Together, these methods allow me to cope with a difficult text and have a better perspective on it.

ReplyDeleteA.)The way I see it, one of the most important things an essay can have is creativity. The introduction is the first thing the reader is going to look at, so if the essay does not have a creative, engaging introduction, than the reader will be less likely to want to continue. For instance, if you are eating a jelly donut, but the outside is very bland and tasteless, you wont want to continue in to the delicious jelly filled center. If the body is to long and rambling without being creative, it will put the readers to sleep. On the other hand, though, if you don't get to the point with relevant information, the essay will cause the reader to lose interest in essay, ass well as the topic it is supposed to be dealing with. And finally, the conclusion must summarize the essay in a way that will leave the reader thinking about the topic. I think the best way to do this is to end the essay with a question that leaves the reader with something to think about. What I have just written mixed in with grammar and spelling and all that jazz, you have the makings of a great essay.
B.)When I am reading, say, Shakespeare, and I come across something that I don't quite understand (because it's Shakespeare), the first thing I do is keep reading. This helps me to understand the context, and a lot of times what I don't understand is explained later on. If not, I will reread the passage and see if there is something that I may have missed the first time I read it, for example, if there was a word that I misread that messed me up. I break it down, thinking about other things I have read and making connections to things I already know to try to explain it. And finally, if I can't explain it to myself, I rage quit and move on. Forget it and don't regret it, that's what I always say.

ReplyDeleteA. I believe the elements of a great essay is constituted by the overall flow of the whole thing. Being worded nicely and staying on topic with each paragraph transitioning smoothly into the next detail helps to make it awesome. Proper use of grammar as well as incorporating larger vocabulary to catch the interest of the reader are minimal yet important aspects to maintain the smoothness of it all. Supporting details that strengthen the idea or concept the author is attempting to convey and share also lead to the essence of a great essay. Especially the use of quotes from a novel if the thesis pertains to a theme or topic presented within it. A great essay can be presented in a multitude of ways, but I believe these core elements can improve the overall essay.
B. It takes quite and ambitious reader to seek out a challenging novel for fun. It may be challenging in the dialect it is written, the terminology it uses, the unique vocabulary that we don't see every day, the phrasing of large passages, or a combination of all of the above. Personally, challenging text did not arise in the school curriculum until I was in eighth grade. My teacher had me do an independent study on the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. She gave me advice, saying that rereading will help a lot with grasping the plot wholly. She also gave me advice to read it slowly, writing down any words I did not know and to look up what they mean in the process. Not only did this help me to expand my vocabulary, it made the story much more clear to understand, which led to the next step of reading between the lines and trying to spot the symbolism the author is trying to imply. This is what made the text further challenging. It was all a matter of opening my mind and allowing myself to analyze the characters and their actions which helped me to not only understand the story and text better, but made it all the more enjoyable for me.

ReplyDeleteA. Throughout my years of education, the combination of all my past teachers' guidance has developed my definition and practice of a great essay. My definition of a great essay encompasses four main elements which are : relevance, fluidness, precision, and interest. The element of relevance in an essay is able to tie together the main points of an essay, starting from the thesis and bridging out into more descriptive, yet relevant points. Another element of a great essay is fluidness which controls the pace and construction of an essay. An essay flowing with fluidness will enhance the audience's understanding, and create comfortable and smooth transitions and overall reading. Precision in an essay consists of the usage of proper grammar, spelling, and look. A precisely written essay will be easier to read, give the essay a professional appearance, and a good appearance to its audience. Lastly, the element of interest can excel an essay, which in turn, places the writer and reader into a realm of understanding and enjoyment.
B. There have been and still continue to be pieces of literature that are difficult for me to understand. Unfortunately, these difficulties have lead me to incorrect and minimal understandings which take away from the puzzle and in depth stories the author places behind the main events. In the past, teachers have tried to guide my understanding by having class discussions during which we share our opinions and feelings about the read literature. These discussions have aided the development of my understanding and ability to understand tough literature. After all my brain can comprehend, I remember to not get flustered of turned away, because learning and developing the mind is an ongoing struggle which all of us face.
A- There are a few important elements to making a great essay. One being a good introduction, it's the first impression the reader gets of the essay. If your introduction is boring then the reader will be bored throughout the essay. Making your point clear is also very important to writing a great essay. You don’t want to make the essay drag on and on it should be interesting and to the point. Another important element to writing a great essay is knowing and understanding what you’re writing about. If you don’t completely understand your essay then the reader will have an even harder time grasping on to the concept of the essay and enjoying it. A great essay has a lot of information, is interesting, grabs the reader’s eye at the introduction, and is enjoyable to read.
ReplyDeleteB- I find myself approaching difficult/boring text very often. I usually have to read one part over and over again. If I try to just go over it once I end up forgetting what it was about. When I read over it again and again I can understand more. There all kinds of sources you can go to when not understanding the text. Sometimes a movie based on a book helps me, although most of them are different from the books visualizing the text helps me a lot. I also listen to others opinions. Listening to what they have to say and how they interpreted the text helps me a lot.

ReplyDeleteA. There are many elements that make up a good essay. One of the most important is having a strong thesis statement. The thesis statement gives the whole paper a central idea and ties it together. Another element that makes up a good essay is having proper spelling and grammar. To me, a paper sounds a lot more sophisticated and pulled together when there is proper punctuation and spelling. It shows that you put a in a good amount of effort and care about your work. Creativity is also and aspect that helps create a good paper. No one wants to read a boring, dull, or bland paper. You need creativity to keep the reader's attention and most of all enjoy what they are reading. I know I have read a good essay when i'm thinking and wondering about it for the rest of the day.
B. When I encounter a difficult text i have a few different way of tackling it. One thing I often do if reread the text a few times to make sure I haven't missed any important details. If I find any unfamiliar words or phrases I make sure to look them up on the internet. This really helps especially when we are reading books written in older English, such as Shakespeare. The last way I cope with a difficult text is to ask a friend who is reading the same thing. I find that getting a different perspective on the the reading can help you understand it more. When I come across a difficult text I cope by rereading, looking up unknown words, or asking a friend for a different perspective.
A. There are many parts that make up a “great essay,” but personally, I think, it comes down to three things. Focus, interest and topic. Firstly, you must keep your essay direct and precise. If you stray too far from your thesis, the reader will lose interest, and you will not present your topic as well as a “great essay” should. For an essay to be great, it must also be interesting. Many essays are written to change someone’s opinion to match your own, but, if the reader is bored halfway through the essay, it is less likely they will agree with you. Lastly, for an essay to be great and support your thesis it must show that you have a full understanding of your topic and your examples. Otherwise, there is no point in writing the essay in the first place. What I was taught, was to have a smart thesis and three strong details to support it.
ReplyDeleteB. When I am confronted with a difficult text, I try to break it into chunks so my brain can process it easier. Also, it helps me to not feel overwhelmed. I sometimes ask other people what they think of a certain part of text, or, what they think a character is saying. That way I can come up with my own opinion. My teachers, and parents, also taught me to break it into chunks. But, if someone has a different way of doing it, then they definitely should use what works for them.

ReplyDeleteA. The elements of a "great" essay are length, the subject, and the way you word your essay. Your essay shouldn't ne only one or two sentences long it should have some length to it to show that you put some time and effort into writing it. The subject that you're writing about in the essay will either make the essay good or bad but it depends on what the topic is and if it will be able to give you enough to writing material for your essay. The way you word your essay is also a key point in making it be a great essay, you must write in a style that will engage your reader and make them want to keep reading. But that's only a couple of elements that would make a great essay in my opinion.
B. I cope with difficult-to-read texts by reading the part of the text that I don't quite understand a couple of times. If I still can't figure out what the text means I read before and after the text, and then I go back and re-read the whole part that I didn't understand. But what I was taught in school was to keep reading the part and if I still didn't understand it I was to ask someone for help.
A. According to what I think and what I have been taught in the past few years, a "great essay" should include a few main elements. These key elements include: thoroughness, factuality, and organization. In order for an essay to be thorough, you must make every detail flow together. I have learned that you can use different transitions to move from one detail in your essay to another one. Once you start writing about one topic, you should try to stay with that topic and not drift off into something that is not relevant to what the essay is about. If you do want to go to a different topic, however, you must make everything have a sense of fluidness so you aren't jumping around with numerous details just jumbled all together. Also, an essay should be factual meaning that every piece of information that you include in the essay must be correct. If it isn't correct, you will get points taken away from your grade. If you aren't sure if its right or wrong then either go online and verify it or just don't even include it. When using information from online, you must always site your source in which you got it from so you aren't taking credit for someone else's work. Organization is also a key element in a "great essay". This is simply because an essay without organization would just be a bunch of topics and explanations all mixed up into a so-called essay. You should always have your essay well set-up and always have similar details in the same paragraph. From my experience, it certainly does take time to be able to create a "great essay", but if you follow these elements then you should be well prepared.
ReplyDeleteB. When it comes to reading literature whether it's in school or out of school on my own time, I often find myself coming across challenging dialogue and difficult types of writing styles. When I find myself in this situation, I simply cope with it with a technique that my past teachers have taught me. If you don't understand it, you should read a passage once to get it in your head, twice to try and evaluate it and make your own thoughts on the subject, and three times to actually understand it and make sense of it. Using this technique when reading difficult books comes in handy and I believe that if you read certain passages over more than one time then it is easier to understand and comprehend it all. I always follow what my English teachers have told me on how to deal with difficult texts. I figure if they know best, then just try their methods and see how it works and so far I think that rereading something can really make a different and help process it in my mind. For example, books with slang words or characters with funny accents, I find it challenging to read to a certain extent. From past experience, Shakespeare's' drama "Romeo and Juliet" was the most difficult text I've ever had to read. You just have to break everything down and try to get through the hard stuff. I find that if you picture a book as a movie, its a bit easier to understand as well. Many books will have difficult texts and people just have to find a way to cope with it; whatever method works to your benefit is the best.

Even if the topic may not be the most interesting topic out there, make it be. Collect as much knowledge as you can on your topic and you'll be on your way to a great essay. When supporting your topic you must make sure to not repeat the same supporting detail. When you start to repeat details that’s when the reader slowly starts to get more and more uninterested. That’s when you know you didn’t gather enough information. When making a great essay I believe the most important elements are to understand what you’re writing, be confident in your writing, and support your topic.

Ever since elementary school you have always been taught to read over the text, or to keep reading and go back when you finish the chapter. That never seemed to work for me. When I am faced with a difficult text I like to break down the text. For instance Romeo and Juliet. When reading Romeo and Juliet I would find myself very confused because of the very complex dialogue. The way I decided to cope with this was by researching more about the book. Instead of not understanding the book I researched all the definitions of Shakespeare’s vocabulary so that I could understand more about the book. Once I learned more about Shakespeare’s dialogue the book started getting easier to read. Reading the book over and over again may not always work. By reaching and learning more about the book I read I find myself coping with a book that may surpass my reading level.

ReplyDeleteB. There have been many occasions throughout my life in which I have had to face a difficult text. When I am faced with this challenge i find myself looking for ways to cope with the text. If I come across a text that is difficult but I need to read it by a certain time I set goals for myself, such as reading a certain number of pages everyday. If I am facing a text that I am having dificulty comprehending then I approach it in several ways. The first thing I do is take notes on what I am reading so I can begin to understand what is going on. If taking notes is not enoughI will often read a chapter then look up summaries online so I can figure out what is going on. In school i have been taught to ask many questions and also to have discussions about what is being read, I have found these two ways to be very helpful. There are many ways to approach a dificult text you are reading.
A. I've always found a good essay difficult to write, because we have been taught to remember so many important elements. You need to have a clear view on the topic, keep it organized, and remember to support your thesis with important details. It is also important to use good transitions to hold the reader's interest. The perfect balance of keeping your essay concise and giving enough details to completely explain yourself, is something I have always found difficult to achieve. What I personally find important when writing an essay is creativity. It's important to make sure that your paper has something that makes it different and something that will leave the reader thinking. I think writing something that is unique is more important than having perfect spelling or grammar.
ReplyDeleteB. When dealing with a difficult text I have always been taught to reread the information until it becomes clearer. Taking notes on things that you find particularly confusing is also a method most teachers have encouraged. In some cases this helps, but I don't think that it is the most effective way to understand the text. I find it more helpful to have group discussions about the literature. Talking to other people about their opinions and views makes the reading easier to understand. It can also give you a fresh perspective on the meaning and significance of the text. If people talked more about the literature and discussed different ideas, I think there would be much less confusion.
A. Many elements go into creating a "great" essay. The specific elements I find essential are using good transitions, staying on topic, using facts and lastly, getting your point across. Without these transition sentences your essay would seem unorganized and would jump around topics randomly. If you don't stay on topic, the reader will lose interest or become confused. Whenever trying to convince someone or prove a point, facts are always helpful but make sure they're all true. The main idea in an essay is to get your point across because if you don't, the reader is really taking nothing away from your essay. The reader is just left with a bunch of writing that was not put together well. These are the four elements I find necessary to include when writing a "great" essay.
ReplyDeleteB. When dealing with difficult-to-read texts there are many helpful tools to use. The first that I have been taught is to read then reread. This doesn't always seem to work though and if I still find myself having trouble I use another strategy. Now I slow down and analyze the text, attempting to understand any words I don't know and make sure I know what the author is talking about. If I'm still stuck I usually look for help from another person to at least summarize the parts I do not comprehend. I go to classmates or even the internet as an option. There are many ways to attack difficult-to-read text but these are just the few ways I typically use.

ReplyDeleteA. A great essay is extremely difficult to write due to the fact that we haven't been taught how to write a great essay. If you are trying to write a great essay you need to make sure you get enough information across to make it informative, but you need to make sure you don't sound repetitive. The use of transition sentences is extremely important, and it helps to make the essay read smoothly, which is extremely important. An essay doesn't necessarily need to be long, as much as it needs to contain proper information and be written correctly. As a high school student, you have to write many essays, on various subjects, which can both help and harm you. It can help you because it is practice and it can help you learn proper writing habits. It can harm you because if you are practicing bad habits, it can be more difficult to break the habits.
ReplyDeleteB. When encountering a difficult text, it is important to learn to read said text. When reading older English, like Shakespeare, it is difficult to understand words such as “Doth”, and they can cause certain errors in understanding and correctly interpreting the text. When I am faced with hard to read text I first read supporting text, which can sometimes help you to understand certain phrases or sentences. Occasionally, I will ask the teacher or Google certain words or phrases. If the difficult text is an entire book or poem, it can get extremely difficult to fully understand the text because you may not be able to learn by the supporting text. When I am faced with difficult reading, I attempt to use the supporting text, then I use my resources, the internet and my English teacher, and when all else fails, I tend to make assumptions or simply ask questions.
I think there are many elements to writing a great essay.One of the elements is details. The details you put in your essay are very important. Why? Because they describe and detail your main idea(s). Which are another element in writing a great essay. A third element is knowlage. If you don't know what you're doing or what your writing about then how can you even start. This one sometimes can't be controlled but it still is very important which is time. You can't do a very good job writing your essay if you don't have enough time. Some people may be able to in a short amount of time but most people need adequate time to write a decent essay. The last element i think is important in writing a great essay is getting your point across. If you don't get your point across then what's the point of writing the essay in the first place...
ReplyDeleteWhen I encounter difficult text I either try to skim past it or if that is not an option then unfortunatley i pretty much just give up. Romeo and Juliet could be an example. We read that last year and I didn't understand any of it. It was because the whole book was written in his old time way and I just couldn't take it. At first i'll try and ask questions but if that doesn't work then I really don't try and just give up.
A) To me a "great essay" is a piece of writing that catches the readers attention right off the bat. The essay should open with a thesis to grabs the reader and makes the reader eager or curious to keep reading. Once the reader is hooked, keep them going with a concise, well articulated argument on a topic of interest. A great essay fascinates or entertains the reader from the first sentence through the last. A thesis should be supported by evidence in the form of statistics, expert quotes, history and examples that lead the reader to the author's conclusion. Information should be written in a personal and engaging fashion, not just stated as facts. A great essay should not be too lengthy so the reader does not get bored and lose attention.

I have been taught to reread as well to use context clues to help understand the meaning. Use what you do know to help understand what you don't know.
A. I think that some of the best essays are composed of different elements that make the essay a great piece to read. An essay should not just state facts or opinions but should be written in a way that your reader actually becomes interested in the topic of the essay. A good essay should usually start with a introductory paragraph stating basically what the essay is going to be about. It should also include some background information on the topic. A good essay should also have one or more interesting and fact filled body paragraphs. In the body paragraphs most of the information that was stated in the introductory paragraphs should be explained more in depth. Another component for writing a good essay is that it should not be dry or very boring to read. At the end of a good essay there is also a conclusion paragraph where all points are summed up. Although the set up of the essay is very important another important element would be giving true facts and backing them up with research.
ReplyDeleteB. If I am having difficulty reading a book I have a few methods that I use to try and make myself understand it. One method I use is trying to re-read the text. If that doesn't work then I was taught to always take words or tricky vocabulary that you don't understand and look the words up to find the definition. Once you do that usually you start to have a better understanding of what is going on once you know the meaning of the vocabulary. Another method that I use to cope with a difficult text is by taking a step back and not getting angry that I cant understand. Usually after I do that I start to read with an open mind and it becomes less challenging.
A.There are many elements that makes up a “great” essay. Some of the elements that makes up a great essay are the hook, thesis statement, main points, organization, research/facts, and conclusion paragraph. The hook is one of the element that makes up a “great” essay because it grabs the reader’s attention, and it makes the readers want to read more about it or to find out what will happen next in the essay. Sometimes I find it difficult to write a good hook because it depends on what subject or the argument that I’m going to talk about. The second element that makes up a great essay is the thesis statement and the main point. I think that the thesis statement are the most important because it’s the main point of the whole essay. Basically, the whole essay that I’m going to write about is my arguments in the thesis statement and explaining them more clearly throughout the body paragraphs. Next, I think that organization is important because without organization the whole essay will be a mess. Before I write the essay, I usually brainstorm first and write it down. It makes it easier to write the essay. The second most important elements is research and facts. If i don’t have facts or information to back up my thesis/arguments then it’s going to be difficult for me. Last but not least, the conclusion paragraph is an element that makes up a great essay because it’s my last chance to leave the readers with a good impression and the significance of my arguments or the essay.
ReplyDeleteB.When I encounter a difficult text I usually break the words down and reread it again and again so I can understand it more. I also reread the sentence or the one before that so I can get the idea of what’s going on. Sometimes I take notes, drought down some stuff and look it up online if I don’t get it.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the elements of a well conducted essay is including a lot of detail, paragraphs, neatness, and proper grammar.First, it is very important that you include as much detail about your topic as possible in your essay. State some interesting facts and even opinions of your own if you are allowed. Also, make you you stay on topic and not trail off. If this happens you will confuse the reader and loose their attention of the points your are trying to make. Second, you should have several paragraphs to your essay including: introduction, body, and concluding paragraphs. The introduction should introduce the reader about your topic and what they will be reading about. The body paragraphs is where you talk fully about your topic and include all the important information and little details. Finally, your conclusion paragraph should wrap up your essay. The conclusion paragraph can be slightly like you introduction paragraph too. Next, you should make sure you essay is neat and easy for the reader to understand. Of course this only applies to if you are hand writing your essay. Lastly, another very important element to a well written essay is correct spelling and grammar, which critical when it comes to your essay being graded. Make sure to use the correct punctuation and use of words. Using a lot of detail, neatness, and correct grammar and spelling are the elements to creating a great essay.
Whenever I come across a difficult text I usually go back and read it slowly and try to understand what it is saying. I even read ahead to see if it explains what is going on a bit more clearly. What I find really works for me is taking a minute to think about what is happening in the book and to go back a little and reread. After thinking about the situation that is happening and looking for little hints that can also explain whats happening, I can usually over come a difficult text. Following this method i feel has made me become a better reader than I was in the past.
A. A great essay is made up of many elements. One element is an interesting thesis. The thesis is where you, grab one's attention. Not only does the thesis need to be interesting, but you need to be able to keep the whole entire essay interesting. Another important element that makes for a great essay is, for the writer to use correct spelling and grammar. If one does not use correct spelling and grammar, then the person who is reading your essay might not put a lot of legitimacy into your work. An impressive essay needs sound structure, staying on point, and the avoidance of redundancy. Failure in doing this will result in the reader becoming confused as to your point of view. In my opinion, you can also add quotes that are relevant in supporting your thesis. I was always taught to be able to back up my statements with evidence. The conclusion, is your final opportunity to convince the reader to agree with your thesis. These are a few of the elements that in my opinion, make for a great, entertaining, and impressive essay.
ReplyDeleteB. When I encounter a difficult text, I have certain ways of coping. Most of the time when I encounter a difficult text, I break it down into smaller parts that are not so overwhelming. Also, when I do not understand the vocabulary, I research their meaning. One other method that I find useful is when, there are class discussions. During class discussions, I am able to listen to what other people think and the teacher can explain it in a way that makes it easier for me to understand the text.
A. A good essay should always have a good ending. Teachers in the past have emphasized how significant an introductory paragraph is along with its thesis statement. I think that the conclusion is just as important. It not only summarizes the entire writing in a simple and easy to understand way but it also contains the basic information in an organized manner. This is what the reader is left with at the end, the last impression. If the piece is all well written, then it deserves a nice closing. It is kind of like a book. No matter how good the story is, the ending can always ruin it. Paying attention to the syntax is also important. Words that are not used properly and bad grammar might confuse the reader. The writing should be informative yet easy to read. A good essay contains many qualities but some of the most important ones is to have a good ending and for it to be easy to read.
ReplyDeleteB. To try to understand difficult text, I have always been taught to reread the text over and over. For me personally, this has never been effective. If I don’t understand it the first couple of times, I do not thinking reading it again will make a difference. Instead, I look up the book summary online and find the part I did not understand. Sometimes, I just continue reading. By knowing what happens next, you can mostly read between the lines and figure out what occurred. If the part was important, it will most likely come up again. When it does, it is usually brought up in a different way. Reading something in a different way could cause you to think differently and help to clarify some confusion.
A) To me the elements of a great essay are: a good thesis statement that supports the topic that you have and that you can talk about throughout you essay and proves a point that your topic talks about. Also in your essay you would need three or more supporting details of the thesis statement and the topic. Your writing style should be easy to undersand so that others can read it clearly. Also make sure that you draw in the reader with interesting facts and details about your topic.Lastly you would have a very good conclusion paragraph to sum up everything and bring it all together.
ReplyDeleteB) When I encounter a difficult text, I cope with it by doing many things. Sometimes I cope by slowing down and rereading the text over a few times. If I find that doesn’t work I just move on and hope that the text will make more sense further in the text as I read more. Another thing that I tend to do is ask someone that is reading the same thing or has read it so that maybe that can help me understand more. The hard part with reading hard text is that I find that I zone off as I am reading and then I wont even realize it until I am far into the text and I cant remember anything because I was thinking about something completely different. Most of the time I can go back and reread again and then I understand it.
A.) There are many elements of a “great” essay. The first is to have a strong thesis statement, creating the authors viewpoint on the subject of the text. I believe that the most important element of an essay is whether or not the author has a good understanding of the topic he or she is writing about. A great essay should include details, examples, and background knowledge of the subject. Another component of a good essay is if it is well worded. Essays should sound official and intelligent, making the point come across clearer. A well written essay should be easy to read and have a nice flow to it. The author should keep organized and always stay on track. A good essay should always have a good ending statement or “clincher” to once again sum up the main subject of the essay.
ReplyDeleteB.) When I come across a difficult text, I cope with it differently based on the situation. For school-related purposes, I try to decipher the text as best as I can. I usually re-read each page once or twice to try to get a full understanding of what the author is saying. If the text is really difficult and includes vocabulary that I am not familiar with, I sometimes look the words up in a dictionary. Taking notes is another method I use. When I don’t understand what I’m reading, I try to take notes on key points in the text to look back on later on. The best method to help me cope with a difficult, school-related text is classroom discussions. Hearing other peoples’ opinions and views of the book help me to see things differently and understand things that didn’t make sense before. These are a few methods I use when trying to cope with a difficult text.

ReplyDeleteA. There are many components that make a great essay. First you must have a well thought out thesis statement. The thesis statement should explain what the essay is about, what your opinion of it is and should be debatable. You must have a good understanding of the topic and what the topic is about.then you must write a couple paragraphs about why you feel this way and your opinion. In these you should try to persuade the reader to agree with your opinion. Also in these paragraphs there should be facts about the topic that make your opinion true and believable. The last paragraph should be an review of everything that you just talked about in the essay. I should revisit some of the important facts and end with a re worded version of your thesis statement.
ReplyDeleteB. I am not a good reader. I have always struggled with this and have never been good. My mind always tends to wander while I am reading. Then I miss something important or have to re read a whole page again. How i cope with this is by just re reading it an trying my hardest to stay focused. This is very time consuming though.
Another thing I do is just keep going then look up a summary of what I just read and I can pick up any information I missed there. I also have tried skimming but that also doesn't work for me because I just miss everything in general. Reading in a skill i defiantly nee to work on.
